EAU CLAIRE, Wis. –– Luther Midelfort – Mayo Health System has been designated as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology (ACR). As the result of a recent survey, Luther Midelfort was awarded a three-year term of accreditation in:
• Mammography
• Stereotactic breast biopsy
• Breast ultrasound
• Ultrasound-guided breast biopsy
Designation as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence is awarded when a site achieves accreditation in stereotactic breast biopsy, breast ultrasound, ultrasound-guided biopsy and mammography. Luther Midelfort is the only Breast Imaging Center of Excellence in west-central Wisconsin.
“At Luther Midelfort, each radiologist has to meet all of ACR’s requirements so patients can be confident that every single radiologist is doing the best possible job,” said Dr. Jodie Van Wyhe, breast imaging radiology specialist at Luther Midelfort’s HERS Breast Center. “This accreditation acknowledges the quality patient care that HERS delivers to every woman who walks through our doors.”
The accreditation ensures the highest standards of care are met. The HERS Breast Center is inspected each year by the state of Wisconsin to ensure the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) mammography standards are met and certification is continued. With the addition of digital mammography equipment in 2006, we have been able to reduce the amount of radiology exposure to our patients.
ACR, headquartered in Reston, Va., awards accreditation to facilities for the achievement of high practice standards after a peer-review evaluation of the practice.
Evaluations are conducted by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field. They assess the qualifications of the personnel and the adequacy of facility equipment. The surveyors report their findings to the ACR’s Committee on Accreditation, which subsequently provides the practice with a comprehensive report.
ACR is a national organization serving more than 32,000 diagnostic and interventional radiologists, radiation oncologists and nuclear medicine and medical physicists with programs focusing on the practice of medical imaging and radiation oncology and the delivery of comprehensive healthcare services.
