EAU CLAIRE, Wis. — Dr. Nicole Cote, a dermatologist, recently joined Luther Midelfort. In addition to treating skin conditions and offering cosmetic procedures, Cote will be offering a unique form of skin cancer treatment called Mohs micrographic surgery.
Cote earned her medical degree from Duke University in Durham, N.C., and completed a yearlong dematopathology fellowship through the University of Virginia Health System in Charlottesville, Va., and later completed yearlong fellowships in procedural dermatology and Mohs micrographic surgery through the Virginia Commonwealth University Health System in Richmond, Va. She is board certified in dermatology and dermatopathology.
As a fellow of the American College of Mohs Surgery, Cote has expertise in tumor removal and cosmetic repair of skin cancers. Mohs surgeons remove a thin layer of skin around a tumor or lesion and then examine it under a microscope to determine the location and direction of the tumor’s roots. Subsequent portions of skin are removed only along the tumor’s roots until no more tumor cells are found under the microscope.
Mohs micrographic surgery has cure rates as high as 99 percent while treating patients in an outpatient setting under local anesthesia, Cote said.
“Mohs offers the highest clearance (cure) rate, while also being the most tissue-sparing and cost-effective,” she said.
