EAU CLAIRE, Wis. — Dr. Wayne Wu, an ophthalmologist and vitreoretinal surgeon, has joined Luther Midelfort’s Eye Care Center.
Wu is the only vitreoretinal specialist performing surgery in Eau Claire. He offers evaluation, diagnostic testing and medical and surgical treatment, all done in Eau Claire. This is the first time this level of retinal surgery has been offered in Eau Claire.
He is board certified in ophthalmology. Wu has special interests in medical and surgical management of age-related macular degeneration, retinal detachment, diabetic retinopathy in which retinal blood vessels are damaged, retinal vascular occlusions in which retinal blood vessels are blocked, and congenital and genetic retinal diseases. He treats infection and inflammation of the retina as well as the vitreous, the gel-like fluid in the middle of the eye, and the choroid, the vascular layer of the eye.
Wu received his medical degree from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He completed a residency in ophthalmology at Scheie Eye Institute at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia and a fellowship in vitreoretinal diseases and surgery at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn. Wu also earned a doctorate in biochemistry at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
“It’s a privilege to be able to help people in this part of Wisconsin,” Wu said, noting that up until now people in west-central Wisconsin with vitreoretinal diseases had to travel outside the area for treatment such as retinal detachment surgery and retinal emergencies. “This is why, in the beginning, I chose a career in medicine — to be able to help.”
Before joining Luther Midelfort, Wu was a clinical instructor at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine.
Wu is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology. He is also a diplomat of the American Board of Ophthalmology.
